My Chilean Host Mom: A Face of Resilience

by Emmajean SnookChile, Opinions & PerspectivesPosted on January 30, 2019February 16, 2021No Comments

After a week of training in Santiago, I was put on a bus with a few other volunteers that were going in a similar direction and told that I would stop in Curicó, where someone would be waiting to pick me up to bring me to Sagrada Familia, the small town that I’d be staying …

A hodge podge of photos from the last few months…. A hodge podge of photos from the last few months…. We trained, moved, de feathered an indigenous chicken, welcomed baby goats, helped kill a goat (2 times for Ramone), met loads of people, ate tons of “pap” (maize, kind of similar to polenta), tried emasi, a type of sour milk, with sorghum, saw our first giraffes and baboons while on public transit, visited a country club, practiced learning the basics of the siswati language (including attempting different click sounds and being laughed at a lot), and much much more. Sorry for the absence of posts- maybe I will get better, likely I won’t. #eswatini #swaziland #peacecorps #emmajeanstravels

Some photos from our time in Mexico City in March! Some photos from our time in Mexico City in March! We are hoping to also end our trip here because there is an endless # of things to do. Highly recommend. Currently in Oaxaca and heading to Veracruz state next.#emmajeanstravels #mexicocity #mexicotravel
San Francisco de Campeche Our last stop before our San Francisco de CampecheOur last stop before our current workaway in Sabancuy. Beautiful town (city?) that has kept most of their fortress walls intact (was built due to piracy, but ended up really never needing to be used) & has a beautiful boardwalk and, of course, more stunning architecture. We even got to take in a free outdoor EDM show. Starting to see some rolling hills, which were nonexistent where we were in Yucatán and Quintana Roo states. #campeche #emmajeanstravels #mexicotravel #womenwhotravel #campechemexico
Christmas in Mérida! Mérida has been fabulous and Christmas in Mérida!Mérida has been fabulous and a nice step back into a larger(ish) city. They are very proud that Mérida is one of the safest cities in the Americas. We were able to take a bit more of a deeper dive into the history of the area (as it’s the capital of the Yucatan state) with a walking tour & museum visits. I am continuously amazed at how much more there is to learn about the world… the caste war & the henequen (sisal) hacienda system are two things that came up often here, which we had seen/heard snippets of while in Valladolid but hadn’t gotten as much information.El Lucero is also the best cantina we’ve been to yet with the best botanas. The food scene in Mérida is great. La Chaya Maya (we went to the original location) is a must as well - we got the 4 yucatecas option (chile relleno, negro relleno, Cochinita pibil, pavo pivian-pictured). Just when I thought I had had enough of eating cochinita pibil they proved me wrong. Next up is Campeche.#mexicotravel #womenwhotravel #emmajeanstravels #meridamexico #meridayucatan
Valladolid, MX Late post, what a beautiful town wi Valladolid, MXLate post, what a beautiful town with lots of cenotes nearby (walked to 1, biked to 3) and multiple archeological sites, including Ek-Balam and Chichen Itzá. We were so warmly welcomed at the small place we stayed at and really by everyone we encountered. The Mayan language is alive & well here. It was a great place to start out our Mexico travels. #valladolidmexico #couplestravel #travelinmexico #emmajeanstravels
